In an exclusive interview with Desimartini, Amar Upadhyay speaks about his career, the roles that excite him amongst things!
Amar Upadhyay needs absolutely no introduction. It won’t be wrong to say that, he was one of the ‘prime (time)’ reasons for the audiences to be glued to their television sets. How can anyone forget the iconic and evergreen role of Mihir Virani in the cult series Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi.
Desimartini caught up with the man himself Amar Upadhyay for an exclusive interview, wherein he speaks about his glorious career and also the kind of roles that excite him, amongst other things.
You’ve had a versatile career in both TV and films. What helps you decide which projects to choose?
I have always believed in choosing roles that challenge me as an actor and allow me to explore different shades of performance. I look for strong storytelling, well-etched characters, and something that resonates with the audience. Whether it’s television or films, the script and the depth of my role are the biggest deciding factors for me.
You’ve played a variety of roles throughout your career. Which one has been the most challenging for you, and why?
Every role comes with its own set of challenges, but Mihir Virani from Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi will always be special because of the sheer impact it had on audiences. The responsibility of carrying such an iconic character was immense. On the other hand, playing roles like Mukhi Virendra Pratap Singh in Molkki was equally challenging because it required a different kind of intensity.
Doree 2 is the continuation of a very successful season. What can fans expect from this new season in terms of story and character development?
Fans can expect a deeper emotional journey, more twists, and a stronger narrative as Doree is grown up now. The story will explore new conflicts and relationships, making it even more engaging. My character, Ganga Thakur, will face more challenges and dilemmas, pushing him to make some tough choices.
How has your character evolved in Doree 2? Are there any new challenges or aspects you’re exploring this time?
Ganga Thakur’s journey in Doree 2 becomes even more complex. He is someone who stands for justice and is deeply connected to the story’s core theme. In this season, he will face personal and moral dilemmas that test his beliefs. There are more layers to his personality, and I am excited for the audience to see this evolution.
Mom Tane Nai Samjay has gained a lot of attention for its unique story. What made you want to be a part of this film, and how did you relate to your character?
The moment I heard the script, I knew I wanted to be a part of this film. It has a strong emotional core, and the subject is something that will touch people’s hearts. My character has a lot of depth, and I could relate to his emotions, struggles, and relationships. As an actor, such roles give me a chance to showcase my range and connect with the audience on a deeper level. And I thank my director Dharmesh Mehta. He is brilliant and now the movie is in its fifth week, which is a bit rare for movies these days and its declared super-hit.
Looking ahead, are there any particular roles or genres you’re excited to explore in the future?I am always open to experimenting with different genres. I would love to do more intense, performance-driven roles, maybe a psychological thriller or an action-packed role. Period dramas also excite me because they allow me to step into a completely different world. My goal is to keep evolving as an actor and take on projects that challenge me creatively.
